How to… casting on at the beginning of row

This tutorial shows casting on stitches at the beginning of a row, some of my toy patterns use this technique so that parts can be knitted in one piece instead of working separately.  Its a useful technique to know and if you have ever knitted accessories such as gloves then it will be something you will have already come across.

There are various ways of doing this technique and many videos on you tube.  This is how I do it when designing toy/softie patterns.

Casting on knitwise at the beginning of row.
  1. Work as if to knit but do not remove the stitch from the right needle.   2.  Pull up the loop (stitch) onto the left needle this makes one stitch.  3.  Repeat this for however many stitches you want to cast on.  4.  Your new stitches are at the beginning of the row.  5.  Knit the new stitches and knit to the end of the row as normal.

Casting on purlwise at the beginning of row – same procedure but purlwise.
  1. Work as if to purl the first stitch, keep the stitch on the right needle.  2.  Pull up the loop (stitch) onto the left needle this makes one stitch.  3.  You have cast on one stitch at the beginning of the row.  4.  Repeat this for however many stitches you want to cast on.  5.  Purl these new stitches as normal and purl to the end of the row.
