Alternative Finishing Option for Knitted Bowl Covers Pattern.
If you cannot get or do not wish to purchase the IKEA Fryken bowls as shown in the images for the Bowl Covers Pattern then I have an alternative finishing option for you to knit the Chunky Bowls and achieve the finish shown below. In this post I have included instructions to knit a base for the bowls and then sew this on in the final step. You will still need the pattern to knit the bowl itself.
The bowls look very similar to the originals, they are just not quite as rigid. They still look cool and hold their own shape by following the pattern instructions and using Super Chunky /Super Bulky yarn.

A base is sewn to the bottom of the bowl in the final step. This alternative option means you can still knit the Chunky Striped Bowls as above without the need to have the Fryken baskets. (Images above have been made using this alternative finishing)
The Instructions below follow the same requirements as the pattern so please refer to this for yarn and needle sizes.
Kf&b = Knit into front and back of same stitch – K2tog = Knit 2 stitches together
| Medium Bowl base Instructions: Cast on 6 stitches Row 1 – K1, Kf&b, K2, Kf&b, K1. (8) Knit row Row 3 – K1, Kf&b, K4, Kf&b, K1 (10) Knit row Row 5 – K1, Kf&b, K8 (11) Row 6 -K1, Kf&b, K9 (12) Row 7 -K1, Kf&b, K10 (13) Row 8 -K1, Kf&b, K11 (14) Row 9 – Knit row, (14) Knit row Row 11- K1, K2tog, K11. (13) Row 12 – K1, K2tog, K10. (12) Row 13 – K1, K2tog, K6, K2tog, K1. (10) Row 14 -K1, K2tog, K7 (9) Row 15 -K1, K2tog, K6. (8) Row 16 -K1, K2tog, K2, K2tog, K1. (6) Cast off and pull to shape gently. |
Small Bowl base Instructions: |
Pin the base on the bottom of the bowl slightly tucking it towards the inside to give a neater finish, thread your needle and attach this to the bowl to finish. Turn the bowl over and shape with hands.
